Question 1

Do I need a licensed asbestos removalist?

Accepted Answer

In NSW, removing more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos, or any amount of friable asbestos, must be done by a licensed removalist. A Class B licence covers non-friable material, and a Class A licence covers both friable and non-friable. Our SafeWork NSW licensed team holds Class A and Class B licences.

Question 2

What happens during an asbestos removal job?

Accepted Answer

Work starts with identifying the material and preparing an asbestos removal control plan. SafeWork NSW is notified before licensed work begins, the area is isolated and the material is removed under controlled conditions. Air monitoring and a clearance inspection follow, and all waste is tracked to a licensed disposal facility.

Question 3

What is an asbestos clearance certificate?

Accepted Answer

A clearance certificate confirms an area is safe to reoccupy after asbestos removal. An assessor independent of the removalist inspects the area, carries out air monitoring where required and issues the certificate; friable removal needs a licensed asbestos assessor. We coordinate the independent assessor and supply the certificate with waste records.

Question 4

Do you prepare asbestos registers and management plans?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We arrange asbestos surveys, registers and management plans for commercial, strata, industrial and government buildings. A register records the location, type and condition of identified asbestos, and a management plan sets out how it will be controlled, monitored or removed, as required for workplaces under the NSW WHS Regulation.
